IPL or Fractional 1540: Which is Best for You?

IPL or Fractional 1540: Which is Best for You?

Although surgical facelifts may always remain popular, the last decade or so has also brought a plethora of noninvasive skin-renewal technologies. Without an incision, stitch, or significant recovery time, this market is expected to expand by more than 15% by 2030.

While you’re grateful that the non-invasive anti-aging techniques available to you aren’t just Great Granny’s choice between a jar of cold cream or a chin strap, sometimes the number of options feels overwhelming. One thing you do know: You don’t just want to improve the look of your skin. You want to improve its health, too.

Facial aging is the result of a number of losses that take place over the years. Facial muscles relax and lengthen. Facial bones atrophy. But a third factor is one that you can control and reverse with anti-aging devices such as intense pulsed light (IPL) and fractional 1540: the loss of the protein collagen and elastin. Restoring these proteins restores your skin.

Dr. Frank Batlle is committed to bringing you the safest, most effective anti-aging treatments possible at D'Allure Medspa. In our office in Dallas, Texas, we offer IPL and fractional 1540 to people who want to build their skin back up from the inside out.

But what’s the difference between IPL and fractional 1540? Which does what, how do they work, and which is the best choice for you?

Intense-pulsed light

An IPL device generates various wavelengths, fluences, and durations of light to improve your skin’s health. First developed and used in 1992 to treat spider veins on the legs, IPL is now effective in treating a variety of aesthetic concerns, including:

You might choose IPL if you have more than one aesthetic concern. For instance, you want to lift and firm your face, but you also want to eliminate sun spots and spider veins. We adjust the wavelengths of light during your treatment to address all of your issues and goals.

Unlike ablative lasers — which remove the top layer of your skin and cause weeks of flaking, redness, and peeling — IPL has a shorter recovery time. You may have a little swelling, pinkess, or tenderness for up to 48 hours. However, you may need a series of up to six treatments to resolve dark spots.

Fractional 1540

Unlike early ablative lasers, which remove the top layer of your skin, fractional 1540 is nonablative. That means it rejuvenates your skin without causing surface damage or removing your epidermis.

Instead, this gentle laser reaches down to the intersection of your epidermis (outer layer of skin) with the dermis (next layer of skin). The energy creates tiny column-shaped wounds that signal your body that it’s time to repair your skin. Your immune system rushes in along with a blood supply that brings growth factors and proteins.

This rebuilding process stimulates the production of new collagen and elastin. As with IPL, neocollagenesis results in skin that’s thicker, stronger, and more elastic. Your skin has a more even tone, looks tighter, and feels more youthful.  As with IPL downtime is limited.
